Overview

The Spiti Backpacking Trip is your gateway to the “Middle Land” between India & Tibet — a timeless valley of surreal Himalayan landscapes, smiling locals, ancient monasteries, glacial rivers, colorful meadows, and deep blue skies.

This trip takes you on the more scenic, safer Shimla route — open year-round (except during very heavy snowfall). Riding along the iconic Hindustan–Tibet Highway, you ascend gradually, allowing your body to acclimatize comfortably while soaking in unreal mountain panoramas.

From the apple orchards of Reckong Peo to the dramatic Kinnaur Kailash views of Kalpa, from the centuries-old murals of Tabo Monastery to the cliffside grandeur of Dhankar, from the rooftop vistas of Key Monastery to the nostalgia of mailing a postcard from Hikkim, this itinerary ensures you witness both the well-known treasures and the hidden gems of Spiti.

The journey’s final jewel is the crescent-shaped Chandratal Lake, where stargazing under the Milky Way completes your unforgettable Himalayan adventure.

Faq

Is Spiti Valley safe for backpacking trips?

Yes, it is generally safe, especially on a guided group trip. Safety precautions are in place for high-altitude travel, and our local drivers are experienced in handling mountain road conditions.

When is the best time for a Spiti Backpacking Trip?

April to October is considered the best. April–June offers clear weather & greenery; September–October offers post-monsoon clarity and fewer tourists.

What is Spiti Valley famous for?

Its cold desert landscapes, ancient monasteries like Key, Tabo & Dhankar, Asia’s highest post office at Hikkim, fossil-rich Langza, and stunning high passes like Kunzum.

What should I pack?

Warm layered clothing, sturdy waterproof shoes, gloves, sunglasses, sunscreen, personal medication, reusable water bottle, and some cash (ATMs are rare).

How to handle altitude sickness in Spiti?

Ascend gradually (this itinerary via Shimla is designed for that), stay hydrated, avoid overexertion, and inform your Trip Leader if you feel unwell.

Must-visit places on this trip?

Chitkul, Kalpa, Khab Confluence, Nako, Tabo Monastery, Dhankar, Key Monastery, Chicham Bridge, Hikkim, Komic, Langza, and Chandratal Lake.

How is the weather during the trip months?

Days are pleasant (10–20°C), nights are cold (near 0°C at higher camps like Chandratal).
